Important to know about the Panic Hook
You have to get in close to try to open the panic hook manually in a panic situation. Something that a lot of equestrians don’t think about is, when pressure is applied to a panic hook, it becomes much harder to open or even impossible to open.
We have heard of handlers trying to open the panic hook under pressure, and when they finally get the sleave down, the hook comes flying open with such force that you can seriously injure your hands.
On top of these risk factors the panic hook adds a lot of weight to the tie-ups, they are noisy when used against metal, for example in horse trailers and horse lorries.
The panic hook can be very fiddly to attach and detach, generally requiring two hands to operate them, especially when wearing gloves.
If you do manage to get the safety hook open in a panic situation, you also end up with a loose horse with nothing acting as a lead rope to allow you to regain control of the horse and calm the situation down.
The different tests with the panic hook were very interesting as we had a variety of different types of the panic hook to try out. None of the panic hooks released by themselves as some people expect them too. Instead, they withhold huge amounts of weight which poses a massive injury risk for any horses that are tied up with them.
We witnessed weights ranging from 244 kg on a brand-new panic hook to 357 kg, 400 kg and even 506 kg on older rusty so called “safety” panic hooks. All of them either broke or something else broke, but none opened.
When they did break pieces of metal shrapnel flew in multiple directions and at great speed which could easily hit the people close by or the horse, increasing the chances of injury and escalating the panic situation.
Other commonly used names for the panic hook are equestrian panic hook, quick release panic snap, horse panic snap buckle, horse panic clip buckle, secure get snap buckle, quick release panic hook, panic snap hook, quick release panic hook and panic snap.
