At Equimade, we are dedicated to enhancing horse welfare through cutting-edge innovation and increased transparency. Coming from a background working on the first European SaaS platform, we are especially interested in one of the most transformative advancements in equine management: the FEI’s launch of electronic passports for horses – The Equipass.
This digital evolution could set to revolutionize how veterinary, farrier and equine therapy records are securely maintained and shared throughout the horses lifetime.
What is Equipass?
During the 2025 FEI General Assembly in Hong Kong, the FEI introduced Equipass – the first fully digital horse passport designed to centralize identification, health data and travel documentation in one secure, accessible platform.
Equipass addresses urgent industry needs for accurate health records, improved biosecurity, and easier compliance with national and international travel regulations. Its launch marks a pivotal step toward modern, traceable, and welfare-centered management for horses in global sport and breeding.

With Equipass, each FEI-registered horse receives a unique digital profile where ID, medical and vaccination records, location details, and travel history come together for lifetime traceability. Owners, riders, grooms, veterinarians, and officials can now access and update essential data in real time, managing health and cross-border movement effortlessly while ensuring the highest standards of safety.
“Equipass represents a milestone for our sport, combining technological innovation, international reach, and multi‑stakeholder collaboration in a way that has never been achieved before,”
FEI Veterinary Director Göran Akerström said.
By automatically integrating existing FEI records, Equipass eliminates duplicate paperwork and manual updates. The platform is designed for reliable, user-friendly operation across devices.
This digital passport not only streamlines logistics and regulatory compliance – it actively strengthens biosecurity. With adoption starting in January 2026, Equipass is set to become the gold standard for responsible horse management and international equestrian travel.

Stage implementation
Equipass will be rolled out in three strategic phases to ensure a smooth transition and broad adoption across the equine community:
- Phase 1 (Starting 26 January 2026): Launch of the mobile app and administrative tools for all horses registered with the FEI, providing immediate access to digital records and management features.
- Phase 2 (Late 2027 to Early 2028): Expansion of the system to include national horse populations through partnerships with interested National Federations, broadening the scope beyond FEI-registered horses.
- Phase 3: Opening the platform to studbooks and additional stakeholders with potential collaborative partnerships, including revenue-sharing models to support sustainable growth and innovation.
From here on, the post will include our thoughts for the future of Equipass
This phased introduction will enable Equipass to evolve from a solid foundation within international sport to a comprehensive tool fostering transparency, welfare, and could lead to a true welfare traceability at all levels of the global equine industry if/when (?) then next phase was introduced:
- Phase 4: The Future of Transparent, Holistic Horse Welfare.
Comprehensive Veterinary Records in Equipass
The FEI electronic passport, Equipass, could in the long run transcends traditional identification, and could serv as a dynamic, centralized health dossier that records all veterinary treatments, injuries and medical history in real time. This unified digital record empowers veterinarians to deliver more informed and holistic care by providing immediate access to a horse’s complete health background.
Equipass’s transparency in veterinary care could also offers a powerful tool to map and centralize all treatment data across horses globally. This unified system could allow easier identification and analysis of various diseases and treatment methods beyond individual veterinarians or insurance providers. By aggregating comprehensive treatment histories, as well as scientific research, Equipass can facilitate improved veterinary research, enhance disease tracking and promote more informed and consistent care practices, ultimately benefiting horse welfare on a broad scale.
Inclusive of Farriers, Equine Therapists and Horse Care Professionals?
Farriers, equine therapists and other horse care professionals, could also benefit significantly from the Equipass. However, today, some horse owners do not fully disclose critical information to buyers, veterinarians, farriers etc making horse care more challenging and potentially compromising the horse’s welfare. Without complete access to a horse’s veterinary history and treatment records, farriers may struggle to understand the cause and effect and tailor hoof care to the horse’s current needs, which can affect performance and wellbeing.
With electronic documentation in Equipass, farriers and equine therapists can directly access comprehensive and up-to-date veterinary data. This transparency enables farriers to customize their work precisely according to the horse’s medical background, improving outcomes and ensuring farrier interventions align with overall health and therapy plans. Equine therapists, too, can develop rehabilitation programs that complement veterinary care, strengthening welfare and collaboration among all equine professionals.

Building Trust in Sales with Full Transparency
The equine marketplace and competitive scene are profoundly impacted by the level of transparency around a horse’s health and history. Unfortunately, many new owners face significant struggles upon purchase because previous sellers have not fully disclosed all relevant medical, farrier or therapy information. This lack of transparency can lead to unforeseen welfare and health complications, hindered training progress and costly corrective care, making the new ownership journey more challenging than expected, and not the best horse life.
The Equipass offers a transformative solution by providing comprehensive, verified health and treatment records accessible to all stakeholders. Buyers gain true confidence, knowing they have a full picture of a horse’s medical and therapy history rather than relying on incomplete or selective disclosures.
By fostering an environment of openness and accountability, electronic passports can empower owners and veterinarians to make better-informed decisions. This reduces risks associated with hidden conditions and promotes a culture where trust and horse welfare are paramount, safeguarding both the horse’s future and the integrity of the equine industry.
Proactive Welfare Through a Treatment Flagging System in Equipass?
Many in the horse sport community recognize that the prevalent practice of regular injections – often carried out as routine “health-service” treatments – can sometimes be misaligned with the horse’s signals and natural needs. This approach may reflect a mentality of quick fixes rather than genuinely addressing underlying issues, potentially undermining true welfare.
In some cases, horses are subjected to repeated treatments, masking pain or discomfort without allowing the horse to signal its real state. An especially concerning scenario arises when horses are overworked, often covering excessive miles between competitions in transport vehicles, which can lead to both physical strain (like ulcers) and psychological stress. In these situations, the accumulated wear and tear, coupled with potential over-treatment, can compromise their long-term health and well-being.
A proactive welfare approach incorporates a treatment flagging system – an intelligent mechanism that detects and alerts stakeholders when horses receive excessive interventions or are subjected to intensive competition schedules in a short period. This system encourages more responsible, welfare-centered care by discouraging unnecessary treatments and promoting natural healing, thereby respecting the horse’s signals and physical limits.
In essence, such a system aims to shift the focus from temporary performance gains to sustainable, humane management that prioritizes the horse’s health, comfort, and mental well-being, aligning industry standards closer with the natural behavior and signals of the horse.
An innovative flagging mechanism could alerts stakeholders to horses that have received excessive treatments within a short period, discouraging premature returns to performance and encouraging responsible, welfare-focused care practices that prioritize true healing over quick fixes.
Owner-Controlled Privacy and Data Security
Owners retain full control over who can access their horse’s records, ensuring privacy and that treatment decisions are made collaboratively with full awareness of the horse’s condition and history, safeguarding welfare and data integrity.
Additionally, potential new owners should naturally have the opportunity to review the horse’s complete history – a little like acquiring a high-value piece of art with verified ownership and restoration records. This transparency during ownership transfer fosters trust and informed decision-making, benefiting both the horse’s welfare and the broader equine community.
A Step Forward in Equine Welfare Innovation
The Equipass, FEI’s electronic passport, initiative pioneers a way to a new standard for integrating veterinary, farrier, equine therapy records etc in a single, transparent digital system.
Equimade supports this innovation, which enables equine professionals and owners to collaborate more effectively, thereby raising global standards for horse welfare. However, if the solution remains solely a digital passport, its benefit is limited to human efficiency and fails to embrace the full horse-centric welfare potential that truly transformative advancements could offer.

Empowering True Horse-Centric Care
The launch of FEI’s Equipass could mark a landmark moment in equine welfare and management. By integrating digital technology with a horse-centric approach, we can finally move beyond mere administrative efficiency to a system that truly supports the health, welfare and long-term wellbeing of every horse.
This evolution, helping connect professionals, owners and caretakers in a transparent, collaborative network focused on safe, informed and humane horse care. As Equipass rolls out globally, it has the potential not only to raise welfare standards but to transform the relationship between humans and these remarkable animals – ensuring that every horse’s story is honored and their care optimized throughout their lifetime.
